Industrial Process Control Training

Process control training that keeps
expertise in the control room

Process control training teaches engineers, operators, and technicians to configure, tune, and optimize PID loops, DCS/PLC systems, and advanced process control — taught hands-on through real-time simulation, in Houston, Zagreb, or online.

About PiControl Solutions: Common Questions

The questions behind
The next step.

What does PiControl Solutions actually do?

Three connected things: we develop process control software as an OEM, we consult inside operating plants on control design and optimization, and we train engineers and operators on the same material. The software is written by the people who use it on real plants.

Does model identification require a plant step test?

No, and that is the central difference. Identification works from completely closed-loop or open-loop operating data with the loops left in auto or cascade, so there is no deliberate plant upset, no off-spec production and no test campaign to schedule.

Will it work with our DCS or PLC?

Yes. All of the common PID equation forms are covered, so a loop can be tuned in any DCS or PLC from any vendor — ABB Ability, Allen Bradley PLC5, Foxboro I/A, Honeywell TDC3000 and Experion, Emerson DeltaV, Siemens PCS7, Yokogawa CENTUM and others.

We already have an MPC. Do we have to replace it?

No. The multivariable models inside an existing controller can be re-identified and improved in place — AspenTech DMC, Honeywell RMPCT, Yokogawa SMOC and PACE, Emerson PredictPro, Foxboro Connoisseur and any other worldwide MPC vendor.

How much data does identification need?

Far less than ARMAX, DMI, step-response coefficient and impulse-response methods, and it does not have to be clean. Noise, unmeasured disturbances and drift are handled without preconditioning, normalization or stationarity.

Can the software be used for teaching as well as for plants?

It is used both ways. The integrated loop simulator makes the same package suitable for a university course or an in-house control room training session, which is how a control engineer can practise on a loop before touching the real one.
